Kiln Disappointments

My last firing was a low-fire glaze. I've talked about the joys of unloading a glaze kiln full of bright shiny surprises (yay!), and now I'm going to talk about the disappointment of opening a glaze fire and finding bubbles, cracks, and discoloration (boo!).
I wanted to fire a full kiln load of glaze pieces, so I've been waiting until I had enough work to do so. That was problem number 1: Anticipation and expectations.
Problem number 2: I bought low-fire commercial glazes that I'd used a long time ago (with good results) so I didn't feel like testing was necessary.
Out of my last firing only TWO pieces were sellable. I have other monkey mugs, a wall piece, and a few other little creations that will have to go in my junk pile. So disappointing! I really should have tested the glazes...

The good news is that I am quite pleased with these two (both are for sale in my etsy shop):

New listing: Octopus Bowl

My cupboards are filled with bowls that I've carved and slip trailed and made individually. I'm not sure if any of them match or stack nicely. But that's the way I like it! I can choose my bowl according to my mood. I keep hearing encouragement to create matching sets... While it's there in my mind stored away, I'm just not sure I'm a matching set kind of gal. I like the unique things. So in that spirit I've added a one-of-a-kind octopus bowl to my Etsy shop! I hope there are more people out there like me, the ones that like having precarious stacks of dishes.

These are the latest mugs I've gotten from the kiln! They will all be posted in my Etsy shop over the next few days. I just got done posting this one:

Mud Cloth Mug

This sweet little mug is now in my shop! (click on the photo for more information)

And tonight I'm going to list this mug in my shop. It's one of the 'ding mugs'- I put an intentional dent in the side and then carved around it.

Owl Bank

This owl just went up for sale in my shop. He's special to me because he was one of those creations that I didn't expect. I had been making mugs mugs mugs, and decided that I'd try something else.... And this is what came out! I loved him so much that now I'm making more banks. He's been an experiment from the beginning and through those experiments I've learned how to make owl banks a little more refined. Because of this it is super discounted. Normally these guys are $45, but this one is $25. If you love it, get it NOW because it is one-of-a-kind!

You can view it in my Etsy shop HERE (or click on any of the photos).
